Hello

No, I'm not the guy who rides motorcycles. I design stuff. If you would like to chat, please feel free to reach out via the Contact page.

What I do

I am a seasoned User Experience practitioner specializing in human-centered product experiences. I research, design, and develop a spectrum of solutions ranging from smartphones to payment devices. I also oversee the procedural and administrative aspects of UX including design strategy, process development, and team management.

I am passionate about design and love to create new and delightful experiences. Please let me know how I can help you.

My background

Upon completion of graduate school, I joined the Health Effects Laboratory Division of CDC/NIOSH. This work involved research of digital media-related health communications, using the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) as the theoretical basis. I further contributed to the field by serving as a peer reviewer for the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology.

I transitioned back to Design and did work for Toyota, Mazda, Disney Mobile, Diebold, HP, and others. My extensive design and research background led me to be frequently tapped as UX team lead, and became more involved in procedural methods for UX.

At Kyocera Wireless I established the first User Experience Design group, within the Industrial Design organization. We crafted an integrated approach that seamlessly melded the ID with UX. We furthered Kyocera’s new brand initiative and reciprocally integrated it into our UX strategy. This included identifying a distinctive new font for our UI and generating patent submissions for UI and Mapping experiences.

At Nokia, I served as UX Lead for Series 60 solutions, and later as Ideation Lead for the MeeGo platform. Ideation efforts generated a patent submission for a flexible display user experience, and a patent grant for an interaction design model using proximal hover technology.  I also served as an Expert Reviewer for Nokia’s UX123 competitive analysis team. With Nokia’s transition to Windows Phone, I oversaw research, usability, and OOBE for Lumia smartphone products for North America. I was part of a global team and worked with groups in Finland and China to establish uniform research and validation processes.

I subsequently was tapped by my former manager at Kyocera, to help reconstitute his ID team at Verifone into a full Experience Design organization. I crafted a transition proposal using established change management processes as a model, and we successfully established a new Global Experience Design Group to oversee ID/UX. We introduced industry standard approaches to UX design and contributed to the development of award winning products.

In 2017 I decided to transition into medical device design, and established both a User Experience Design and a Human Factors Engineering discipline at a medical device design consultancy. The medical device space is far more rigorous than other product design industries, and I was required to implement design and documentation procedures to conform to requirements set out by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

In addition to my work responsibilities, I also strive to give back to the UX community. I served as Board Member of the San Diego Experience Design group.

Summary

As a UX practitioner, I wear many hats. I started in UI and Interaction Design, and this is still my core competency. Logical, efficient, and coherent interaction is fundamental to my approach. I also do design research, conducting qualitative and quantitative studies to assess designs. My close collaboration with Industrial Design and Visual Design provides me with a strong understanding of design principles, and allows me to constructively contribute to those initiatives.
